Program Part I

At the Tauriko clubrooms 7pm Friday evening and continued at the TECT Park 300m range clubrooms at 9am Saturday morning.

 

  1. Brief History of BR and Sanctioned Shooting. Sanctioning Bodies:
    -New Zealand – NZDA
    -International – World Benchrest Shooting Federation (WBSF)
  2. Discussion of the Different Disciplines and Classes
    1. Group Shooting
      -Light Varmint Class LV (any caliber, 10.5 lb)
      -Heavy Varmint Class HV (any caliber, 13.5 lb)
      -Factory ClassThe below are rifle classes not competed for in New Zealand:
      -Sporter Class (any caliber, less restrictions on barrel and stock than in LV, 10.5 lb)
      -Unlimited Class (almost anything goes, cannot be attached to bench, no weight restrictions).
    2. Score Shooting
      -Rimfire
  3. Rifles
    -Actions – single shot, manufacturers, port configurations
    -Stocks – tapers, 3 inch forearm, material
    -Barrels – tapers, selection
    -Triggers – manufacturers
    -Scopes – manufacturers
  4. Targets and Backers
    -Group Shooting and Score Shooting sample targets
    -What is the Sighter Target and the Record Target?
    -100yd, 200yd, 300yd
    -Moving Backers
  5. Match Format and Rules
    -Safety
    -Time limits
    -Range commands
    -Warmup targets and sight in periods
    -Crossfires, DQ’s, Talking, Sportsmanship
  6. Scoring
    -The scoring device (for group shooting)
    -Match Winner, Aggregate, Grand Aggregate, 2-Gun etc
    -Score shooting (X, 10 Ring, Aggregates)
    -Penalties
  7. Review of popular cartridges
    -6PPC, 22PPC, 6BR, 22BR
    -Tight neck basics
    -Bullet selection
    -Sizing (selecting dies, bushings, bump, squeeze)
    -Seating (straight line seaters)
  8. Setting Wind Flags
    -Spacing
    -Height relative to bench top and target
    -Position relative to bullet’s path and adjoining benches
  9. Bench Setup
    -Bag and front rest setup
    -Cartridge management

 

Program Part II

Saturday afternoon will include a demonstration of shooting a benchrest rifle.

 

  1. Shooting of a Light Varmint (LV) Class benchrest competition rifle.
  2. Introduction to barrel cleaning:
    -Suitable rods and jags.
    -Solvents
    -Patches
    -Brushes
    -Abrasives
    -Bolt lubing and maintenance.
  3. Reloading at a match will be demonstrated.

 

Ian Owen will stay on to shoot the Peeking Wallaby Match on Sunday morning.
