Peeking Wallaby Match & The Hop House Coaster Shoot
Need to practice your wallaby hunting skills in New Zealand? Newshub says if left unchecked wallabies could cover a third of the country over the next 50 years.
This is a fun and novel benchrest shooting match that uses 3 different targets. One at 100m, one at 200m and one at 300m. Five scoring shots are fired at each distance with unlimited sighters. You can expend as little as 15 rounds to complete the match but most competitors will use 18-24 rounds. A variety of rifles can be used from factory hunting rifles to custom rifles.
Dial-up (target turret) scopes with a minimum of 15x magnification or more, are highly recommended so competitors can see their shots on the target and compensate for drop and wind effects.
From August 2023 we have secured a new sponsor and have added the Hop House Coaster Shoot to the end of the Peeking Wallaby Match. Save a round or two as you could win a $50 dinner voucher. The rules are below.

Peeking Wallaby Match Rules V2.1 – Updated March 2024
Mandatory Equipment:
- Front sand bag, front mechanical rest with sandbag fitted or a bipod.
- Rear sandbag rest.
- Scoped centrefire rifle.
*Rifles with muzzle brakes are allowed but for the comfort of others they will all be shot together in one group.
Entry & Match Fees
- Gates open at 8:00am for range set up.
- Registration at the range is between 8:30am – 9:15am. Please do not arrive late.
- Safety & match briefing 9:30am. Match commences 9:45am.
- All shooters must have a current firearms license. No supervision.
- Entry for the 2024 year is open to any NZDA branch member.
- Peeking Wallaby Match fee is $20 for any NZDA member ($10 for Bay Of Plenty members).
- Hop House coasters are $5 each.
