This is a winter alpine hunt in the Lower North Island area. A great opportunity to experience the beauty and brutality of winter alpine hunting. This hunt is not for the meek and mild, good equipment and plenty of resilience are required.
Hopefully there are still some Red Stags about with their antlers intact. Stags typically drop their antlers in August so it may end up a meat harvesting trip. If we’re lucky we might find a couple of monsters still with antler.
The helicopter flights to and from the tops will save you a lot of walking and climbing. This time of year there’s limited access to some areas due to farming operations around the base of the mountains. This also means there’s less likely to be trampers or other hunters in the area.
Depending on final group numbers we may drop hunting parties at two separate huts. The huts do have wood burners to keep the inside temperature above zero and dry your socks after traversing the tops in the snow. You can be sure your meat will keep well in the outside freezer.
Your Responsibilities:
• All your Gear and Food – including cooking equipment
• Your Hunting Permit
• You MUST bring a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) for yourself – no sharing
• Appropriate Clothing for a Winter Alpine Environment
• Your DOC Hut Tickets for 5 Nights
Carpooling will be organized once numbers are confirmed. Don’t miss this great opportunity!
Note: The registration fee includes your helicopter flights. You may be required to pay petrol money towards carpooling in addition to the registration/booking fee. For budgeting purposes allow approx. $900-$1000 for this trip, this should be enough to cover all your costs (including registration/helicopter). If you don’t have appropriate alpine clothing and equipment then you will need to get some – which could cost you quite a bit unless you can borrow some.
The club has PLBs for hire if you don’t have your own.
