Range Fees
The facilities on offer at our 300m TECT Park Range are fantastic and are a great asset to our club and region but it does cost a lot to have these facilities available and range fees need to cover the costs or the range is not financially viable.

The range fees (effective from 1/3/23) are:

  • Annual range ticket – $100
  • Range access tag – $30 (one-off cost on application)
  • Range Open Day non NZDA member fee – $50
  • Range Open Day NZDA member (any branch) without range ticket – $25

NZDA-Range Manual-Appendix 5.2-Restricted Operating Procedures
NZDA-Range Manual-Appendix 5.3-Record Forms
NZDA-Range Manual-Appendix 5.4-Range Standing Orders

Range opening hours are from 7am to 8:30pm, or depending on what the official TECT park opening hours for the given time of year.  i.e. winter hours, or summer hours.

Our induction process for obtaining a range ticket/tag consists of a multi-choice written test about our range rules and safety procedures, and by attending at least three (3) practical shoots that must be completed on site before any members can be granted their own range tag/fob to access and shoot on our range without the supervision of an NRO (Nationally-qualified Range Officer). If you have just joined our club and purchased an annual range ticket (and had your membership approved by the club committee), then to start the process you will need to download and complete the questionnaire/test form below. Before starting the test you will need to read the Range Standing Orders (NZDA-Range Manual-Appendix 5.4-Range Standing Orders) to answer some of these questions, which are provided in the link above.

Range Induction Questionnaire

You can either print out the questionnaire and fill in by hand then scan and email back, or complete it electronically using your pdf viewer then save it and email it back to induction@deerstalkersBOP.org.nz for marking.  Assuming that you pass the test 100%, then the questionnaire will then be digitally signed (by the range manager, or the ‘Inductions Officer’ who is in charge of managing all the inductions and range tags), and sent back to you so you can print it out in hard-copy form. Be sure to take it with you to the range for the practical assessment shoots where a Nationally Qualified Range Officer (NRO) will sign you off on each shoot that you attend, provided that you can demonstrate a good level of competency and safe firearms handling practices, and a good understanding of the range rules and protocols at each practical assessment shoot.  This is not a shooting/accuracy test, but more of an assessment to ensure that you understand and can follow all of the important range procedures, and that you can also maintain your aimed shots within an acceptable cone of fire – as is required for a ‘contained range’ design such as our range facility.

Please note: The NRO on duty is under no obligation to sign off your ‘shoot’ for you simply turning up and attending, and they may not issue you a ‘pass’ on your assessment if you display poor firearms handling practices, or a poor attitude to safety or knowledge of the rules of this rifle range. With a large number of members now having their own access to the range at any time, it is vitally important that all new and existing members understand and adhere to the rules in order to avoid any incidents which could see the range use restricted, which then spoils it for everyone. (Existing members may be required to do a refresher course from time to time, to keep their range access privileges current.)

AT LEAST ONE of the practical induction shoots must be done on a public ‘Range Open Day’, which are held on the last Sunday of each month (except December).
You may choose to complete all 3 of your induction shoots on these monthly ‘Range Open days’, where we will have 5-6 range officers on site to assist everyone, as well as a number of other shooters also attending. Alternatively, your 2nd and 3rd practical induction/assessment shoots can be completed at one of the following:

  • NZDA-BOP Range Open Day on last Sunday of each month (from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Last registrations are @ 2:00pm.) – held at our TECT Park 300m range.
  • An NZDA-BOP club members range/training day. (Proposed) To be held on the 2nd Saturday (or Sunday) or each month, dependant on the number of people at the time who may be requiring special induction shoots. (Note that this is just a new proposal at the time of writing.) This session is intended to help any club members with doing range ticket inductions, field marksmanship test, or any practical shooting training or assistance with rifle or reloading gear. This session will only be held if enough members pre-book to confirm their interest or attendance on the proposed day.
  • There is also the option of completing your 2nd or 3rd practical/induction by applying for a Private Range Session with an NRO.

NOTE: This is NOT intended to be an ‘express’ 2-3 week process – it is more likely to take (on average) 2-3 months for an applicant to get through this process, especially if they are brand new member to our club.  Submitting of your membership applications and fees (while graciously received by NZDA head office in Wellington) does not mean automatic acceptance to the club. Your membership application still has to be approved by the NZDA-BOP club committee at one of our monthly meetings. Until your membership has been ratified by the club committee, then you cannot start the induction shoot process.  That’s not to say that you cannot shoot at the range under the supervision of an NRO at any time, but just to clearly state that any inductions that you may undertake before your club membership or your range questionnaire test have firstly been ratified, will not count towards your ‘3 minimum shoots’ as part of the (private access) range tag process.  There is never a problem with doing a few extra supervised shoots as part of the education and familiarisation process. What we are trying to avoid is people trying to rush through the process in an unreasonably short time-frame, or pressuring the NRO’s to sign them off on their shoots prematurely, even if they have not shown a reasonable level of competency on the range.

It also does not matter how much shooting experience you have had previously. Whether you have been a Firearms License holder for 5 months, 5 years, or 50 years. All new applicants -without exception – have to complete the same induction processes and to understand and comply with the special rules that are unique to our ‘contained range’ facility.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL NRO’S AND CLUB COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE VOLUNTEERS WHO PERFORM THEIR TASKS FOR FREE, AND AT THEIR OWN PERSONAL EXPENSE TO HELP TO PROVIDE OTHERS IN THE HUNTING AND SHOOTING COMMUNITY WITH THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP AND ACCESS TO A CERTIFIED RIFLE RANGE. WE ARE NOT A BUSINESS AND NO-ONE BEING PAID FOR PROVIDING YOU WITH THIS SERVICE. PLEASE BEAR THIS IN MIND WHEN INTERACTING WITH CLUB OFFICIALS, AS THERE CAN BE SOME DELAYS FROM TIME TO TIME, OR OTHER PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED THAT COULD AFFECT THE LEVEL OF SERVICE OR RESPONDING TO YOUR REQUESTS.

Checklist For How To Obtain Your Own Range Ticket/Tag For Private Access

  1. Apply for membership to the NZDA BOP Branch (through our website, or the NZDA National office).
  2. Pay for a Senior or Family membership, plus the range ticket and range-tag fees. (As well as the ‘new member’ joining fee).
  3. Wait for notification that your membership has been approved by the clubs committee. (Note that this stage alone could take 2-6 weeks depending on time of application, or admin delays from NZDA HQ.)
  4. Once your membership has been approved, download and complete the ‘Range Induction Questionnaire’.
  5. Submit the completed questionnaire/test to induction@deerstalkersbop.org.nz for marking, approval if you have passed the test.
  6. The Inductions Officer will email you back and provide you with a signed form, which will have spaces for at least 3 ‘induction shoots’ to be signed-off by a duty NRO once you have completed each of those practical assessment shoots.
  7. Email the Inductions Officer (or meet them personally) to provide a copy of the fully completed form once you have completed all 3 shoots.
  8. Your name will then be added to the list of approved range tag holders, and you will be issued with an electronic gate access tag (‘fob’) to provide you with access through the main gate only. (Standard range ticket holders do not have any private access to the amenities building on site – this is for NRO’s only.)
  9. Please follow the range rules at all times and report any safety or maintenance issues to the Range Manager.
  10. Please keep your membership current. Subscription year runs from 1st March to 28th Feb each year. All subs renewals must be paid within 1 month in order to remain current. Any ‘subs with range tickets’ still not paid by the middle of April will have their electronic access deactivated. Any subscriptions and range tags that are more than 12 months overdue cannot be simply renewed by the belated payment of fees. Range tag holders (if unfinancial for more than 12 months) may also have to complete the range inductions process all over again if they want to reactivate their access tag. This is an extra incentive to keep your subs and fee payments current, rather than letting them lapse.

Private Range Session

If you would like to arrange a private shooting session, fill out the following request form which will be circulated to our volunteer Nationally-qualified Range officers (NRO’s) for one of them to respond direct to you if they can help out:  (Please note – all NRO’s are volunteers. We are not a business, so please do not expect an immediate response. At certain times of year many of our volunteer members may be away hunting or on holiday with family, etc.  There is also no obligation on any of the RO’s to do private shooting sessions, especially for non-members or people who they don’t personally know.  It is totally at their discretion):
